Recycling Summer Camp

In an effort to find new and exciting ways of reaching our youth, Escambia County's Division of Solid Waste Management Recycling Operations created
Recycling Summer Camp in the summer of 2009

.

Dump Your Kid at the Perdido Landfill for a Day!
With budget cuts and more and more liability issues surrounding off-campus excursions for area school children, field trips are becoming less and less common. Yet, no one can deny the importance of up-close and hands-on experience when teaching an important concept. The Escambia County Recycling Summer Camp offers families a chance to give their children a hands-on recycling learning experience in a day-long “field trip” to the local landfill. As the importance of sound waste management practices becomes more apparent, engaging youth in the workings of the Solid Waste Management Division will help facilitate knowledge about this important public service. Eventually the “out-of-sight-out-of-mind” mentality waste management has operated under for decades will give way to a more educated citizenry capable of making informed decisions concerning the waste management needs in their communities. Our Recycle Camp is one small step in encouraging this transition in our community.
