THE PERDIDO LANDFILL

The Escambia County Department of Solid Waste Management operates the Perdido Landfill, a Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Facility, in Cantonment, Florida. Integrated Solid Waste Management is a series of complementary actions to reduce quantities of solid waste generated and manage that which is generated in a economically and environmentally sound manner. Waste is leveled and compacted by large bulldozers and compactors. At the end of each workday a layer of dirt, mulch, ground glass or tires, or other alternative material is placed over the waste to keep odors to a minimum and prevent animals and birds from dragging waste out of the landfill. The Perdido Landfill also runs several waste diversion programs such as Recycled Materials Recovery Facility, Drop Off Recycling, End of Life Electronics, Yard Trash, Waste Tires, Household Hazardous Waste, Paint Reblending, Shoe Reuse, and Recycling Education Outreach.

The Perdido Landfill uses a number of procedures to protect the environment from contamination. Two primary methods include the landfill liner and the landfill gas extraction systems. The landfill liner system collects rainwater and other liquids that may enter the disposal area. These liquids, called leachate, are collected by the liner system and directed to holding ponds on Perdido Landfill for initial treatment before being pumped to the ECUA Water Reclamation Facility at Bayou Marcus for final treatment and disposal. The Landfill Gas Extraction System captures the gas generated by the decomposition of Municipal Solid Waste. This gas contains methane, carbon dioxide, and other gases. At this time the gas is flared off. We are in the process of building an electricity conversion system, allowing Perdido Landfill to turn methane to energy and transfer energy to the local power grid.

The Department of Solid Waste Management continuously promote an education and awareness campaign to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE! Also to encourage participation in the programs offered to Escambia County residents. Some of the programs offered are: free Drop Off Recycling, free Regional Roundups (collection in community of household hazardous waste and end of life electronics), Educational Outreach Services (tours, classes, civic groups, etc.), Paint Re-blending and Distribution, Shoe Reuse and Recycling, Jeans and Jackets Reuse, Household Hazardous Waste, End-of-Life Electronics, Yard Debris, Swap Shop, and many more programs. These services along with participation by the public, will make a significant difference in the amount of waste buried in the Escambia County Perdido Landfill, and will reduce the risk of soil and groundwater contamination, as well as the risk of combustion from items that have been disposed of improperly.

The Department of Solid Waste Management offers tours to individuals, groups, and organizations that wish to learn more about the Perdido Landfill and Escambia County's Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility.
